Hares: Rain Bitch and Pipes
Beer, medic oh wonderful Beer! The run I’ve been anxiously waiting for since last year when I missed it! The World Peace Through Beer Run! Our hares for the day were Rain Bitch and Pipes. No one could ask for a more perfect day! As I arrived at the Fonde Rec. Center downtown off Allen Parkway, see I was excited to get going on the run so I could get to the object of my affection….BEER!
The pack took off around 3:30 and headed in our normal direction towards downtown along Buffalo Bayou. We had a check at the footbridge crossing over into downtown and sure enough, the pack found true trail on the other side of the Bayou. As we ran, we quickly got confused, which is easy in this area of town. The pack split up as trail marks were spotted in several different locations.
Sticky Lips and I found a mark in a small park across from Warren’s Bar (home of FAB martini’s) and took off in that direction. Next thing I know, I lost her and found Rubbin the Boy Wanker and stuck with him the rest of trail. We passed several landmarks that I was familiar with. Heading past Cabo’s, Sambuca, then The Flying Saucer….it was obvious to me that we were headed toward Minute Maid Park.
Sure enough as Rubbin and I got closer to Minute Maid, the front of the pack was seen enjoying a cold beer or two across from the stadium in the parking lot. Our first worldly beer provided by our hares for the day at the Beer Check was Spaten Premium. So we enjoyed our cold beer and took off back on trail.
We headed down towards The George R. Brown Convention Center, then across the street around the lovely new Discovery Green where onlookers laughed as we blew our whistles yelling “On On”!
Next came a serious number of zigzags in and around the streets of downtown Houston. We passed Houston’s new House of Blues and the new Houston Pavilion and then back to Allen Parkway. Of course by now Rubbin and I were convinced that we were going to end at the Sabine St. Bridge. But Rain and Pipes fooled us all! On we kept running!
Rubbin and I came to a check and assumed it just had to go across the street. Next thing I know, we hear “R U” from behind us and here comes Little Boy Blew and some other runners. And here I assumed Rubbin and I were the back of the pack! So we spread out till marks were found, of course, on the other side of the street. Eventually, LBB found marks that went back across Allen Parkway (where we should have just stayed) and down a hill from where we hold the Marathon Mile Beer Check during the Houston Marathon Weekend!
When we started the run, I guess I just didn’t realize how many people were actually there. When the circle began, I was amazed at just how large our group for the day actually was. I would put it close to 60-75 hashers! Now I’m bad at estimating….but it was a lot! (It was 61 hashers)
At the On On, our wonderful hares provided us with several beers from around the world. Those of us that are Beer Snobs got to enjoy the wonderful tastes of Paulaner Hefe Weizen, Baltika, more Spaten Premium, Paulaner Octoberfest Marzen (my personal favorite for the day!), several cans of Guinness Stout, London Porter, and Tecate. And because we are in Texas, it just wouldn’t be a complete hash unless we had our all time favorite Texas Lone Star in a Keg!
The circle was of course another great one, and actually went very quickly because the beer did! How can it not when we have such good beer to be drunk?
As our beer ran out, the ON ON ON location was announced as non other than our wonderful Flying Saucer! How can this not have been the perfect location? With more beer than I can even begin to imagine on tap and in bottles, this was the perfect ending to a perfect day of beer!
Several hashers enjoyed more worldly beers as we ordered some much needed hot food after a good healthy run!
Thanks to Rain Bitch and Pipes for a great day of some much needed GREAT BEER!
On On to next week in the shiggy!
