The Puffy Man Run (Kinda sounds gay dont it?)
Ok, how did I get myself into this...oh, yeah, now I remember, Gas Light
and Limp Noodle waited till the on-on-on and I had a few beers and
called me over as I was leaving and of course I can't turn down a
beautiful woman, so here I am at the computer while the other hashers
are still partying at the Missing Link. And I guess it is somewhat
appropriate that I write this hash trash as part of the hash was run
through my old neighborhood. As a matter of fact, my dad just moved out
of our old house and I still know a lot of the neighbors. Thanks for
running interference for me guys!!. When yall saw me speed up on
Greenwillow, we were passing my old house and the neighbors were out
doing yard work. My dad should be getting calls asking why their son
was running down Greenwillow with wet running shorts with a bunch of
people yelling on-on. :-)
Ok, so much for the preliminaries. The hash on March 21, 1999, was the
Puffy Men hash, hared by none other than San Quentin Cream Puff and
Man Handler. We met at the parking lot of Sellers Brothers (did yall
know that was a Weingarten's back in the 60's?) at the intersection of
S. Braeswood and Stella Link in SW Houston. It was a partial live hare,
and we gave them, oh, about 10 minutes head start, then we took off
going west on the hike/bike trail along Braes Bayou. After crossing the
bayou on the railroad bridge (that used to be a bear to cross when it
was an old wooden bridge) we went by the sewage treatment plant and the
police substation following the trail. Some of us waded across the
bayou (gosh, haven't waded across Braes Bayou since I was a kid) and it
isn't long before we lose the trail and we are scattered all over the
old Meyer property, hashers wandering around I-610, post oak, etc.
Where the devil is the trail?
Now, I have a few choice words for the hares. Maybe I'll save them for
later. Ahem. As I was saying we were wandering all over the place,
through lots of great shiggy, when we catch the trail on Cliftwood, then
down Wood Valley to Greenwillow, past my old house, down to the Willow
Meadows Baptist Church, on to Belfort and into the subdivision along
Stella Link south of Belfort. And at long last we hit a beer check.
Then it is back on the trail (which I again promptly lose) and end up on
South Main, heading south. We see the others way down there and meet
the rest of the group as we trapse through more shiggy (gosh I love
going through lots of shiggy!) where we are convinced that this is a
dead end so we go back to South Main heading south. Through an office
park, through lots more shiggy, and we hit the railroad tracks that
parallel South Main back, then back across South Main (or was that
Holmes Road? we're pretty far from my old stomping ground now) and we
lose the trail again. What are these hares doing? Rationing flour?
We pick up the trail and we are digging through really thick shiggy
(watch out for the metal ladder!!!) where I just about break my legs
when I get tangled in some branches and go down. We come out on South
Main (hey! didn't we just leave that???), and continue heading south on
South Main (aka US 90) to the site of an old drive in theater (don't I
remember that place from high school???) for the on-home and beer!!! We
are greeted with baaaaaaa baaaaaaaa as we come in. Hashers continued to
dribble in for quite some time. I proudly show my bloody legs to all
who are willing to look.
Now a few choice words for the hares....what did you do, lay flour at
random???? Geeeeeez. Well, being new to the group, I'll keep the
choice words to myself.
Eventually, we formed the circle and after the hares did their
down-down, here comes Geek, who celebrated his 1000th Houston hash last
week, and for his 1001 hash, he got lost! It was a great circle, as we
brought in the new boots, re boots, visitors, transfers, Texas aggies
(yep, I was in for that) and the usual accusations and then it was back
to our cars at the start and the on-on-on at the Missing Link. Lots of
drinking and dancing and Popeye's fried chicken! Now some of us have to
get to work real early, and I suspect that when I get up on Monday, yall
will still be partying.
Well, I'm heading out of town, so I need to get this hash trash in now.
Heading to Seattle. See yall in a few weeks.
Dennis, the guy who hasn't gotten a hash name yet.
